Best of 2011: The Top Five Whitepapers

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Year-end requirements wrap up: The five best whitepapers of 2011.

We’ve compiled a list of our top resources in 2011, covering topics from understanding Agile planning to the top frustrations in project management (and how to solve them):

  1. Requirements Management 101. Wish someone would explain requirements management in plain English? Have stakeholders that could benefit from understanding the value at a high-level? Your executives might not care about CMMI, BABOK or the nitty gritty details of functional requirements, but they do care about delivering what was promised to customers on time. And, that’s requirements management. To make sure your projects run smoothly, make sure everyone on your team understands the basics.

  2. The State of Requirements Management 2011. Let’s separate the hype from reality. The results of an industry survey shed light on the real trends, challenges and solutions in requirements management and its impact on innovation. Some results might surprise you, others will validate what you’ve been saying for years.

  3. The Top Five Frustrations for Project Managers. See how you can avoid management swoop-in at the eleventh hour, or creating and sending around a dreaded 200-page plan that no one has time to read once, let alone every time a change occurs. We’ve compiled the top 5 frustrations based on what we’ve experienced and seen others endure over the years and include a tip for how to combat each one and put these tips into action.

  4. The Five Challenges to Agile Planning. If you have experience with Waterfall or traditional “phase-gate” developmental processes, then you know why Agile has gained traction so quickly. It’s a nimble, collaborative way to work. But like any professional process, it takes new skills to gain the promised benefits. Learn the five major challenges that we’ve seen lead to Agile failure, as well as advice on how to make Agile work for your entire team.

  5. Big Hairy Projects: An Infographic. Innovation is tough. Today’s economic pressures make innovation more difficult. Fewer teams have access to a plentiful R&D budget, making R&D funds even more valuable. So, how do teams develop ideas and transform them into successful projects? Jama Software sponsored an industry-wide survey, including over 800 project managers, business analysts & developers, to determine the trends in requirements management in 2011. The 4 tipping points – you know you need requirements management software when…

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

If you read our recent blog, Redefining Requirements Management, you understand the importance of clear documentation and managing requirements effectively.  If you’re a small team in the same office you probably can get along fine with a whiteboard or face-to-face meeting to manage requirements.

But as projects grow in complexity and your team grows in size and geography, so do all the challenges and overhead of keeping everyone in sync.  If this is the case, requirements management (RM) software could add value by helping to keep track of changes, manage trace relationships, update documents, and communicate with everyone on the team.

Here are four common tipping points where specialized RM software makes sense:

1 – Team Size: More than 25 people involved. As your team continues to grow, the need for collaboration and keeping you entire team in sync increases.  If you can get connected and stay connected throughout the entire development process, you can eliminate the vast majority of issues.

2 – Location: If 10%+ of your team is virtual. The more geographically distributed the clients, stakeholders and project teams are, the greater the need for collaboration and consensus.  RM software can keep your team connected.

3 – Complexity: If you have more than 100 requirements. The more complex the project, the greater the need for RM software.  Research has shown that project teams can eliminate 50-80% of project defects by effectively managing requirements.

4 – Change: If 10%+ of your time is spent managing change. As if defining requirements was not challenging enough, they also constantly change and evolve.   More than ever, having the real time traceability and change management that RM software provides is important.

If by reading this you realize that RM software might mean the success of your project – you are not alone.  According to the 2011 State of Requirements Management Report, “60% plan to buy requirements collaboration and management software.”  If you are looking for more keys to success, be sure to check out our 7 Essential Tips to Ensure Success with RM whitepaper.

In the world of developers, being part of an agile team is cool – they tend to be innovative and customer focused.  Our research has shown that Agile is growing and has tripled since 2008.  While it continues to gain momentum it is not always the best process for all organizations.  The majority of teams are using a hybrid approach and are constantly evolving their process to best fit their project needs.

In a recent article on Software Quality Connection, Lisa Morgan explains how and why many teams are moving to a hybrid approach. She discusses why many teams struggle to go only agile and quotes John Simpson saying, “The difference between the [hybrids] and the Agile purists is that the majority of companies still need to maintain the structure and control inherent with requirements management best practices.”  Lisa further explains that while many larger organizations prefer older methods that define all requirements upfront, they tend to be slower to develop.  According to Forrester Research Senior Analyst Tom Grant, too much documentation can cripple a team’s velocity but the lack of documentation can damage a team’s success.

At the end of last year we conducted an industry-wide survey including over 800 participants about the challenges, trends & successes in requirements management today.   Our findings showed that 40% are hybrid, and 26% are waterfall, and that only 19% are purely agile.

How to fight the requirements challenge

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Surprise, surprise: Requirements management (RM) remains a challenge for organizations.

Early this week, SearchSoftwareQuality.com interviewed Forrester analyst Mary Gerush, author of the report, Right Tools. Write Requirements. Right On! to discuss RM trends. According to Gerush, tools are easier to use, as vendors develop lightweight, easy-to-learn solutions. The heavyweight tools with significant ramp-up time, she says, “have become shelfware.” Today’s tools are collaborative, helping keep distributed teams in-sync. They’re also process agnostic — as most organizations “don’t use just one methodology.” And as we learned with the 2011 State of Requirements Management Survey, processes are also constantly evolving.
