How is your success rate?

Friday, February 11th, 2011

In 2008, only 6% of teams successfully delivered projects on-time and on-budget 80% of the time or greater.  Now, the 2011 State of Requirements Management Report shows that 17% of projects had a success rate of 80% or better.  A few years have passed and the good news is that collectively we’re doing better, but failure rates still remain too high; this presents an opportunity for growth in future projects.

As this post on The 99 Percent explains, “Ultimately, it’s the ones who barrel through discomfort, are resilient in the face of failure, and [are willing to take risks] who reach the highest levels of performance.” When a project doesn’t deliver, take time with your team to be retrospective and understand why so that you continuously improve upon your process. Hopefully, in our next report, we’ll see projects with success rates through the roof.

Change happens… now what?

Monday, February 7th, 2011

There’s no question, it’s frustrating to lose time managing change with requirements. In a perfect world, the specifications wouldn’t change, but this isn’t a perfect world.  Requirements change, and often for good reason. The solution isn’t in finding ways to minimize change. The solution is in finding ways to embrace the right changes and keep the entire team in sync with the changes throughout the process. This prevents them from falling into classic traps that lead to frustration, defects, over-runs and scope issues.

So it’s no surprise that according to the 2011 State of Requirements Management Report, of the participants who spend at least half of their time managing changes to requirements, a whopping 25% admitted that less than 20% of their project or product launches were delivered on-time and on-budget. Successful product launches were much more likely for participants who spend less than 10% of their time managing change, as more than 23% had a success rate of greater than 80%.

It’s all about iteration.

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Developing new products can be risky, time consuming and down right costly.  Yet, breakthrough new products and apps continue to steal the spotlight and grab the headlines.

However, according to the 2011 State of Requirements Management Report, “bringing new products to market” is not the main goal for most teams.  Based on the survey results, the stated goal for 88 percent of projects is “enhancing existing products.”  The reality is we spend more time and energy on incrementally enhancing existing products to make them better.  It’s all about continuous iterations.  Listen, plan, build, test.  Rinse and repeat.

Do you understand what your customers need?

Monday, January 31st, 2011

We know innovation is important. We post about it on the blog, hear it from analysts & read it in reports. We see companies innovating & changing the ways in which we interact with products, environments and each other.

But innovating is tough. As a buzzword, innovation is ubiquitous. But as the saying goes, “easier said than done.” Today’s economic pressures make innovation more difficult for companies, as fewer teams have access to a plentiful R&D budget. That makes already precious R&D funds even more valuable. According to the 2011 State of Requirements Management Report, “gaining a clear understanding of what [their] customers want” is a top challenge for most companies. However, innovators must leverage customer feedback in order to clearly understand their end-users’ needs, creating not only innovative products but also products their customers will use.
